Adjust font size:

Southern Sudan witnessed one of the year's worst instances of ethnic violence early this month when gunmen attacked a fishing camp, killing at least 185 people. Most of the victims are women and children.

It happened on August 2nd along a river where members of the Lou Nuer ethnic group had set up a temporary fishing camp. The attack was allegedly carried out by ethnic Murle fighters. Eleven soldiers of the Sudan People's Liberation Army are among the dead. They were guarding the camp. A local County Commissioner says it's the worst massacre people there have ever witnessed.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon condemns the killings and called on the U.N. mission in Sudan to work with local authorities to restore calm. He says the Government of Southern Sudan should take measures to punish those responsible and protect civilians.
