Rescue, relief continue in Taiwan
Adjust font size:

It's been nearly a week after powerful typhoon Morakot swept across Taiwan.

About a hundred and forty people have been killed so far, and the number is likely to rise. Naval vessels will be used to reach coastal areas.

Few people had ever heard of Hsiao Lin village before Morakot's arrival.

The name is now an expression of sadness and desperation.

Local authorities estimate four hundred people were buried in mudslides triggered by heavy rains.

A rescuer moves along cables slung above a destroyed bridge so as to get into the village of Xinkai and rescue trapped villagers in Kaohsiung of Taiwan, August 12.
