First there was Zhang Yimou's stage play, "Impression: Sister Liu", a well-known scenic drama set in the southern city Guilin, in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Now, another natural landscape is being used as the backdrop for an epic stage production. "Genghis Khan" is set in Hulunbuir, a vast grassland in the northeast part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. After completing rehearsals, the play has begun to treat both locals and tourists.

They are herdsmen by day, but when night falls, six hundred of them transform into actors. They gather to tell the story of their heroic ancestor, Genghis Khan, who united the Mongol tribes in the early 13th century, and founded the Mongol Empire, the precursor to China's Yuan dynasty.

The drama depicts several key points of Genghis Khan's life-long feat. The seventy-minute production immerses the audience in Mongolian history, culture, and customs. They are treated to the Horse-head Fiddle, Humai, Mongolian Long Song, and the ancient royal amenities of the Mongol Empire.
