The Robert Silman Associates team used a cantilever system made from wires to suspend long fronds of a palm tree made out of cans.

Architect Alex Baumel explains their technique.

Alex Baumel said, "with a wire strung between the two ends, so that the string of cans can stick out and only be supported on one side. So, when the unsupported end wants to drop down the wire actually holds the top of the cans together and prevents it from bending too much."

And even the usually crusty New Yorkers will tell you this is an idea that's definitely not full of beans.
