In 1973 Tam teamed up with his friends establishing the band Wynners. The band performed mostly in English. Tam was one of the two lead singers in the band until it split in 1978.
But Wynners holds reunion concerts once in a while to the delight of their solid fan base.
Alan Tam pursued his solo career after Wynners disbanded. In 1978, Tam released his debut album "Naughty Boy". He also dabbled in the movie industry, winning the Golden Horse Awards for his role in movie "If I Were Real" in 1981. Tam later released three records including "Love of Frog," "The Root of Love," and "Love Trap," setting the stage for his future success.
Having won a string of trophies at various competitions, Tam announced at the 1987 Golden Hits Awards in Hong Kong that he officially quit music competitions of all kinds, but he was willing to work tirelessly in support of up-and-coming singers.
Alan Tam holds a great number of records in the history of Hong Kong music. Examples include holding twenty concerts in a row in Hong Kong's Colosseum in 1985. Four years later he broke his own record with an impressing total of 38 concerts in a row. Also, his golden hits such as "Flower in Water" and "Hard to Say Good-bye" are among the most popular songs ordered at Karaokey clubs.
In 2003 Alan Tam teamed up with fellow artist Hacken Lee for a major world tour entitled "Left Alan Right Hacken" which toured from Hong Kong, Macao, the Chinese mainland, and Southeast Asia, to parts of Canada and the United States, winning rave reviews. One year later Tam collaborated with mainland singer Dao Lang in releasing singles "The First Snow in 2002" and "The Wolf Covered with a Goat's Skin."
2005 marked Tam's 30th anniversary of his music career. He celebrated the occasion with a grand concert.
In 2007 he was the recipient of the 30th Hall of Fame Award from the Composer and Authors Society of Hong Kong for his 30 years of contributions to the Chinese music industry.
So far Tam has taken part in 276 concerts, of which 189 were solo concerts, a record that will be hard to break in the Hong Kong music scene.
