Five years ago, cartoon images of goats and wolves jumped onto the small screen, and became instant favorites with thousands of Chinese kids. The series "Happy Goat and Big Big Wolf" created a sensation for Chinese own animated production. Now let's meet the creator of those hours of fun.
"Marry a Man Like Gray Wolf." The popularity of this on-line song is a tribute to the big "villain" in the animated series "Happy Goat and Big Big Wolf". The wolf who catches goats to take home to his wife, is a household star to kids and grown-ups alike. And it bears a striking resemblance to its creator, Huang Weiming.
Huang Weimin, Big Big Wolf, said, "The original design had wide eyes. But then I thought a bad guy should have drooping eyelids, and it turned out to look like me."
But Huang added some touches to give the wolf a character of its own.
Huang Weimin said, "Why is the hat worn-out? I think he's not a rich man. He goes out to catch goats every day, and gives them to his wife. His wife wears a wool coat, while he wears a worn-out hat and a pitiful scarf. Luckily he is strong inside."
Five years ago, Huang Weiming came back to China from Canada, where he studied cartoon drawing for four years.
He drew six goats and two wolves for the company where he worked.
The boss was so impressed he decided to turn them into a cartoon series. In June 2005, "Happy Goat and Big Big Wolf" was born.
The story revolves around the never-ending struggle between the goat and wolf families. The hilarious plots and dialogues add to its popularity.
The company had 40 episodes in mind, but by 2008, audience demand had generated 500 episodes.
