Yunnan relief work underway, 130,000 residents evacuated

The magnitude 5.8 earthquake in southwest China's Yunnan Province. As of 6 p.m. Friday night, 25 people were confirmed dead, with more than 250 others injured.

The tremor also destroyed at least 18-thousand houses. About 130,000 local residents have been evacuated to safety. On-site rescue forces confirmed that no one remained buried under rubble by late evening, and individuals with minor wounds have received medical treatment.

Those who sustained major trauma were transferred to facilities in other regions. Traffic, power flow, communications, and water supplies remain stable.

The central government has promised 55 million yuan in assistance funds while provincial authorities have allocated 24 million yuan and 5-thousand tents along with an equal number of quilts and cotton coats.

Officials warn that the quake zone may experience significant rainfall in the next two days, increasing the possibility of mudslides, in the geologically fragile area.
