Desperately sick Indonesians are flocking to railroads in a Jakarta suburb for an unconventional take on electric therapy from passing trains. The questionable practice stems from the poor health care in the country. Our correspondent Andy Saputra reports on this unique but dangerous phenomenon.

Railway shock therapy springs up in Indonesia

This is the latest miracle cure in Indonesia. The railway shock therapy.

The idea is simple, you lay down on the tracks, connecting the 2 rails together and get electrocuted by the electricity that runs the trains.

And many here swore by the effectiveness of this dangerous therapy.

A local resident said, "It works, I used to have muscle pains and can't walk but now after three visits, I can walk normally"

This unique therapy was started with a local rumor about a man who tried to kill himself by being crushed by a train. He was fed up after medical treatment failed to cure his paralysis. But while laying on the tracks, he suddenly felt cured.

Now Oumen and dozens of Indonesians flocked the railways everyday with hopes to cure various diseases like diabetes, stroke and other ailments.

Aside from the obvious danger of being run over by incoming trains, these people are taking huge risks of sudden electric shock, but for most of them they have no other choice.

Indonesians have free access to health care if they met a certain criteria but poor implementation have left millions with no access to government run clinics, which are already underfunded and severely overcrowded.
