The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, or East Timor in English, is located in Southeast Asia, with a population of around one million. Sharing borders with Indonesia, the sovereign state comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor and several other nearby islands.

East Timor was colonized by Portugal in the 16th century until 1975, when the small country declared its independence, but later that year was invaded and occupied by Indonesia. The country restored its sovereignty in 2002.

East Timor's decades-long independence struggle against Indonesia destroyed much of its economic infrastructure, reducing it to Asia's poorest country. The tiny country also has vast offshore gas reserves and a large and potentially lucrative coffee industry.
