A 23-person team of police officers departed from their base in east China on Thursday to join the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in East Timor for a one year mission.

It is the 16th peacekeeping team China has sent to East Timor since 2000.

To date, China has sent 305 police officers to the restive Southeast Asian nation for peacekeeping, said a spokesman with the Fujian provincial public security department.

The team, composed of police officers from China's Fujian Province with an average age of 33, will assist the UN Integrated Mission in East Timor in ensuring a safe and peaceful general election in East Timor, the spokesman said.

Before departing for the one year mission, the team had eight months of rigorous training.
