New school & new life bring new hope to Yushu

Two years after the devastating earthquake, 1,084 new buildings have been put up in Haxiu village of Yushu county. Haxiu elementary school is one among them.

Improved studying conditions - Once the students could only study in makeshift tents, now they learn in a brand new school. A student, said, "I think the new classroom is very cosy and warm. I will study harder and make progress every day."

Children in Haxiu town, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai province had class in a new school on March 1. The construction of the new school was assisted by a Beijing construction company.

The students also get more nutritious food, in the 500 square meter dining hall. "There is a variety of food - eggs, apples, rice and many others. In the past we only had vegetables and we could only eat outside in the tent."

The new school is also equipped with many modern teaching facilities. A teacher said, "These facilities help us a lot in teaching. The students can also understand better of what they learn."

Haxiu elementary school was put into use this March. Before that, its more than 500 students had to study in tents. With severe natural conditions, the students suffered a lot during the cold winters and hot summers.

Now with the new school, the students there feel they have been given one of the best gifts of all.
