Chinese scientific research vessel, the Da-yang Yi-hao, or Ocean One, has started its nine-day exploration and research mission in Nigeria's waters. This is the first time that marine scientists from both countries are working together on sea research.

More than 100 Chinese and Nigerian scientists and officials attended the launching ceremony on board the Dayang Yihao in the Apapa Harbor in Lagos on Tuesday.

It's a landmark mission for the research vessel.

Liu Xianfa, Chinese Consul-General in Lagos said, "It has been 20 years since China began its marine expeditions. We have finished 25 expeditions and this is the 26th. This is the first time for the Dayang Yihao to conduct a joint research mission with a foreign country. It will promote the marine scientific research of both China and Nigeria."

The Dayang Yihao arrived in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub, last Friday.

According to Tang Yong, the chief scientist of the ship's research team, the research will help Nigeria learn about the fishing condition of its seas.

The vessel will conduct research mainly in the western part of Nigerian waters, where a comprehensive oceanic survey will be conducted together with Nigeria.

Tang says a total of eight Nigerian scientists have joined the Chinese research team for the mission.

The director of the Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research, says the joint mission will benefit the two countries in marine science and technology.

The ship is expected to conclude its voyage by the end of August.

The Dayang Yihao is China's only open-ocean going vessel designated and equipped for deep-sea research.
