As Rossum's character drinks her way through college, she meets a guy, played by Jason Ritter, who falls in love with the aimless student. Playing one of the few men in the movie, Jason found it refreshing working with strong female characters.

"That was one of the things that I really liked about it. You don't have a lot of films that are – where it's completely driven by two female leads. So, that was really exciting. It was a lot of fun to come in and work with those two people. They're both as strong and amazing in real life as they are in the film," said Ritter.

As meticulous, willful Kate begins to rub off on whirlwind, spontaneous Bec, both women find themselves facing down regrets, exploring new territory and expanding their ideas of who they want to be. Swank was whimsical as she explained the film.

"To me this is a beautiful love story between two women – an unromantic love story – about two women that come together and help each other become their real selves. When you're diagnosed with an illness, you're given an expiration date and in that moment you realize that all the things that were important to you, aren't important anymore. In other words, the things that you worried about, the things that you put so much on, doesn't hold any importance. What's important is looking at the person you love and saying, 'I love you. I don't want to take you for granted. Who am I supposed to be?' It just shines a light on that and that to me was a really important part of telling this story," Swank said.

The film explores the extent to which people can have an infinitely indomitable influence and impact on each other. As the two best friends bond and become closer, their voices begin to blend together.
