Countries: Japan vs. Allies (United States and Australia)

Aircraft carriers: Japan: 2 fleet carriers (Shokaku and Zuikaku) and 1 light fleet carrier (Ryujo) vs U.S.: 2 fleet carriers (USS Enterprise and Saratoga)

Result: The battle is generally considered to be a tactical and strategic victory for the U.S. because the Japanese lost one light carrier, more ships, aircrafts and aircrew, and Japanese troop reinforcements for Guadalcanal were delayed.
