1 Chinese dies, another missing in Samoa tsunami

One Chinese died in the devastating 8.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in American Samoa early last week, and another Chinese was missing, presumed died.

Wang Zhiguo, a Chinese citizen living in the Samoa capital of Apia, told Xinhua that his friend surnamed Li, died in the tsunami in American Samoa. His body has been recovered. Li's wife, also from northeastern China's Jilin Province, was seriously injured.

Another Chinese woman was missing in the U.S. territory, presumed dead, Wang said.

The total tsunami death toll across the two Samoas and Tonga stood at 176. A total of 135 people died in Samoa and eight were missing after the tsunami. At least 32 people have died in American Samoa, while nine died in Tonga.
