Strong quake hits off Japan's southern coast

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit off Japan's southern coast at 4:09 p.m. Friday, Japan's meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. No tsunami warning has been issued.

The quake hit off the coast of Amami Oshima island and Hokuto Oki in southern Japan at a depth of 60 kilometers.
