A Filipino employee of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) was shot dead in southern Philippines, local police said Friday.

The UN agency said the victim was not on official duty and the shooting was believed to be triggered by personal matters.

Nestor Bulahan, the UNICEF employee based in southern Cotabato city, died on Thursday due to a gunshot wound on the abdomen, a report from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao police said.

Police said Bulahan was on the way to meet his mobile phone text mate in Maguindanao province but was approached by the gunman and was shot at close range, according to the report posted on the local on-line news network INQUIRER.NET.

UNICEF Manila office confirmed the shooting but said it is still verifying the details.

"He was not on official duty when the incident happened and the incident is believed to be personal," said a text reply sent to Xinhua.

The accident occurred four days after at least 57 people were shot dead in Maguindanao.

Loose arms proliferated in the volatile Muslim Mindanao, a region also plagued by decades-old insurgency battles between the government troops and Muslim rebels.
