China on Tuesday said it expected Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to the country this week will produce positive outcomes.

"With the joint efforts , we expect and believe Harper's visit will deliver positive results and boost bilateral relations, " Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters here.

Harper will arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for a five-day official visit, the first since he came to power in 2006.

Qin said the Chinese government paid much attention to Harper's visit as China and Canada have witnessed a good momentum of improved relations in recent years.

During Harper's stay in China, leaders of both countries will have wide-ranging and in-depth discussion on strengthening trade relations and international issues of common concern, Qin said.

Earlier, Harper said in a press release announcing his China visit that Canada is "committed to a strong relationship with China that reflects our mutual respect and the need for practical cooperation."

"Our two countries enjoy a growing partnership, sharing significant interests in trade and investment, the environment and regional security," he said.
