The Philippine government on Saturday issued the lowest level of tsunami alert after a 8.8- magnitude earthquake generated a tsunami that could travel across the Pacific.

While no evacuation order is in effect, communities along the Eastern coast of the Philippines are advised to prepare for possible evacuation, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a bulletin posted on the institute's website.

The magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck the coast of Chilean coastal city of Concepcion at dawn Saturday. Tsunami was confirmed to have been generated by the earthquake near the epicenter and measured heights reached 1.28 meters in Valparaiso, Chile, the institute said.

It said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii will monitor sea level gauges nearest the region and report if any tsunami wave activity is observed.
