China and Russia agreed Friday to strengthen cooperation in combatting drug trafficking in order to protect people in both countries and safeguard social stability.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Viktor Ivanov, head of Russia's drug control agency, and Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui.

Ivanov and Li agreed drugs were a common threat faced by the international community and cooperation in fighting trafficking was part of the Sino-Russian strategic partnership of cooperation.

They said that Sino-Russian cooperation in countering drug trafficking had made great progress, noting that both sides signed a series of legal documents, had established working mechanisms, and coordinated efficiently within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Both sides pledged to put the signed agreements into practice and make full use of relevant mechanisms to raise anti-drug cooperation to a higher level.

Ivanov and Li also called for concerted efforts by the international community to crack down on drug production and trafficking in Afghanistan.
