Earthquake hits Halmahera, Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale occurred in Halmahera, Indonesia at 0103 GMT on Sunday morning, according to a release by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The epicenter was initially determined to be at 1.7 degrees south latitude and 128.1 degrees east longitude, about 220 kilometers north of Ambon, Indonesia.

Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported a quake with a magnitude of 7.0 rocked eastern parts of Indonesia on Sunday, but there were no tsunami warning and reports of damage or casualties.

The quake struck at 07:57 a.m. Jakarta time (0057 GMT) with the epicenter at 132 km southeast Labuha of southeast North Maluku province and with a depth of 56 km under sea bed.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake was at 6.5 magnitude.
