Domestic violence rises in Portugal

Cases of domestic violence in Portugal rose by 10 percent in 2009, reaching 30,571 cases at the security forces, according to the annual report on internal security published on Friday.

According to the document, women were the main victims of domestic violence, accounting for 82.6 percent of the accusations, and 82.2 percent of those women reporting violence were more than 25 years old.

The 87.6 percent of the accusations made by women were related to aggressions provoked by men, of whom 93 percent were more than 25 years old.

In 2009, 64 percent of the cases of domestic violence were related to the victim's spouse or partner and 13.5 percent of the cases were former partners.

The districts with the largest number of cases were Lisbon, Oporto, Setubal, Aveiro and Braga.
