"Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar and head of National Security Directorate (NSD) Amrullah Saleh rendered their resignation and the president accepted it," the statement said.

Their resignation took place in the wake of Taliban attack on National Consultative Peace Jirga opened on Wednesday and concluded on Friday.

Deputy to Interior Ministry Mohammad Munir Mangal would serve as acting minister and Ibrahim Spinzada would serve as acting intelligence chief, according to the statement.

In the opening ceremony of the three-day National Consultative Peace Jirga on Wednesday, Taliban militants attacked the venue of the Jirga and disrupted it for a while, although two attackers were killed and another was detained.
