2 killed after strong quake in Papua, Indonesia

Two people were killed and at least five others seriously injured and scores of buildings collapsed after a 7.1 magnitude quake rocked Papua of Indonesia on Wednesday, the country's Health Ministry reported.

The quake has also collapsed an electricity generator and scores of houses in Biak and caused 15 others houses engulfed by fire, spokesman of the Disaster Management Agency Priyadi Kardono said.

"Seven people have been evacuated in a hospital, two of them were dead and three others suffer from serious injuries," head of crisis center of the ministry named only Mujiharto told Xinhua.

He said that all the patients in the hospital have been evacuated to airport for fear of tsunami.

The mainshock is followed by a strong aftershock of 6.6, a moderate shock, and a 6.2 foreshock the agency said.

Several buildings in Biak reportedly collapsed, the agency said.

The 7.1 magnitude quake struck at 10:16 a.m. Jakarta time (0316 GMT) with the epicenter at 123 km southeast of Biak of Papua at a depth of 10 km under sea bed, official of the agency named only Sujabar told Xinhua.
