The brand new China-made monorail in the historic state of Malacca will start operation on Aug. 31 in conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia's National Day.

Gan Tian Loo, State Public Works and Utilities Committee Chairman, invited media to take a ride on the 12-million-ringgit (US$3.81 million) train, said to be the most luxurious of its kind, here on Friday.

Gan said that the trains, manufactured in China and assembled here, would run at a maximum speed of 40 kilometers an hour.

He also said that the train, with a carriage capacity of 60 tons, could stand shocks measuring 4.0 on the Ritcher scale.

Meanwhile, the trains were equipped with power generators and its operations would be therefore not affected by power failure, added Gan.
