A female British aid worker was confirmed kidnapped in Afghanistan by the UK foreign ministry on Sunday.
"We can confirm a British national has been abducted in Afghanistan," a spokeswoman of the foreign office in London said in a brief statement on Sunday.
"We are working closely with all the relevant local authorities. We are also in touch with the family and are providing consular assistance," she said.
However, she didn't mention the worker's identity, fearing the disclosure would trigger further risk.
The British national were ambushed along with three Afghans while traveling in the country's northeastern Kunar province. Police had a fire-exchange with the insurgents at the ambush site yet failed to catch them before they escape.
Development Alternatives Inc., a Washington-based international consulting firm and the kidnapped worker's employer, said late Sunday that one of its employee was involved in the incident.
The company works on projects for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Afghanistan.
