Ecuador's police commander General Freddy Martinez has resigned after the unrest triggered by some policemen against the country's president, a police spokesman said on early Friday.

Martinez has presented his resignation, local media cited the spokesman on condition of anonymity, without elaborating details.

Meanwhile, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who was rescued by government troops loyal to him, said the rebel police planned to kill him when he was stranded in a hospital during the unrest.

Correa was rescued after the troops loyal to him launched attacks against rebel police around the hospital where the president was trapped for hours.

The president, who accused the opponents of being behind the unrest, arrived at the presidential palace safely late Thursday and made a speech on the balcony immediately after his arrival.
