The first upgraded Russian Soyuz spaceship carrying three astronauts has docked with the International Space Station (ISS) early Sunday, said the Mission Control Center outside Moscow.

After two days of flight, the spacecraft docked with the Poisk small scientific research module in automatic mode at 4:01 a.m. Moscow time (0001 GMT), bring to the station Russian cosmonauts Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka, as well as NASA astronaut Scott Kelly for an expedition to last for 159 days.

At about 07:00 a.m. Moscow time (0300 GMT) the astronauts will open the hatches and go into the ISS, said the center.

They will join the existing 25th mission at the space station comprising NASA astronauts Doug Wheelock and Shannon Walker, as well as Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, thus restoring the ISS to its full capacity of six crew members.
