The Pentagon has advised recruiting commands that they can accept openly gay and lesbian recruit candidates, according to media reports Wednesday citing a Pentagon spokeswoman.

The U.S. military Tuesday began accepting openly gay recruits into its ranks for the first time in the country’s history after the Pentagon guidance was sent out on Friday.

The move came after the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy in U.S. army suffered a serious blow. California-based U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips ordered the military a week ago to stop kicking openly gay soldiers out of the armed services.

However, the Obama administration is seeking to appeal against that legal decision, which makes the situation still dogged by uncertainty.

Some gay rights activists warn that gay applicants should still not reveal their sexual orientation for fear that the policy may be reinstated if the government's appeal is successful.
