China's UN Ambassador Li Baodong on Friday called on relevant parties to negotiate a mutually acceptable resolution to the Kosovo issue within the framework of the relevant UN security Council resolutions.

"China respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia and appreciates the government and people of Serbia in their commitment and efforts to achieve lasting peace, stability and development," Li told a Security Council meeting on Kosovo.

China always believes that "the best approach" to resolving the issue is for the parties to negotiate "a mutually acceptable resolution" within the framework of the relevant UN security Council resolutions, Li said.

"Council resolution 1244 remains in effect and is still the legal basis on which solutions can be found to the Kosovo issue," he said.

The International Court of Justic (ICJ)'s advisory opinion does not stand in the way for the parties to seek a proper solution through negotiations, he said.

China supports the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) in continuing to fulfill its responsibilities in line with the relevant Security Council resolutions, he noted.

"We are concerned with acts and talks that might endanger the safety and security of UN personnel," Li said. "We urge all the parties concerned to continue their cooperation with UNMIK to ensure its smooth functioning."
