Road accidents kill 18 in Peru

At least 18 people died in four different accidents during the weekend in Peru, the Highway Police (Polcar) said on Sunday.

The gravest accident occurred on early Sunday morning outside Camana city in Arequipa department, south of the country, when a SUV fell into a 50-meter deep cliff.

In this accident 13 people died and 13 more injured and taken to the hospital.

Another accident occurred on Sunday morning in the kilometer 904 of the Pan American South highway in Majes district also in Arequipa, when one truck and two SUVs crashed together, killing three people and injuring two.

In Junin department in the center of Peru, a car crashed against a truck in Central Highway, killing one person.

In Huanta province of Ayacucho department in the southeast of the country, a passenger bus hit a cyclist, who died.

According to the official reports, the road accidents in the past eight years have killed 30,000 people, injured 46,000 and caused losses of 1 billion U.S. dollars in Peru.
