Chinese State Councilor Meng Jianzhu and Russia's drug control agency chief Victor Ivanov met in Beijing on Tuesday and vowed to enhance practical cooperation in drug control.

Meng, also Minister of Public Security, said China wanted to work with Russia to improve the information exchange mechanism on drug control, tap potential for cross-border cooperation, enhance communication on important international anti-drug issues, and curb the rise of transnational drug-related crimes.

Ivanov, director of the Federal Drug Control Service, said Russia was ready to deepen practical anti-drug cooperation with China, so as to combat transnational drug-related crimes in the region.

Ivanov is here to attend the sixth ministerial meeting on Sino-Russian anti-drug cooperation, which was initiated in 2005.

They also signed a memo regarding the newest round of ministerial meetings, and inked a deal on China-Russia cooperation in combating illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals.
