More than 100 people have died over the last two weeks due to incessant rains in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, said police on Monday.

Heavy rains have disrupted normal life across the state, particularly in coastal areas. Over 100 people have already lost their lives due to the rains. Many more are reported to be missing, said the police.

Meanwhile, the state government has asked schools and colleges across various rain-hit districts, including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Tiruvarur, to remain shut.

The state government is gearing up for another major calamity, while a flood alert has been issued.
