At least 19 people died and 50 others were injured when a bus carrying agricultural workers returning from coffee plantations slammed into a wall, police and rescuers said on Monday.

The crash took place in western department Quetzaltenango on Sunday night. First reports said the bus brakes failed and the vehicle flipped and crashed into a wall.

The number of passengers on the vehicle is currently unknown. Rescuers said that the total number of deaths could rise in the coming hours. The victims' names have not been made public.
