China on Wednesday donated 500,000 U.S. dollars to a UN trust fund to support diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region.

Wang Min, the Chinese deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, met with UN Assistant Secretary-General Atul Khare at the UN Headquarters in New York and made the contribution to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur on behalf of the Chinese government.

Wang said that China has been closely following the situation in Darfur and that China backs the international efforts to promote the political process in the region and supports the mediation efforts by the two special envoys of the UN and the African Union in this regard.

"Pushing forward the political process in Darfur for substantial outcome at an early date and reaching a comprehensive political agreement is the fundamental guarantee for realizing peace and stability in the region," said Wang.

In making the 500,000-dollar donation to back the diplomatic efforts, China expressed its sincere hope that concerned parties will work for a comprehensive peaceful agreement as soon as possible in order to settle the Darfur issue in an appropriate way, Wang said.

China will continue to work together with the international community and play a constructive role in seeking to resolve the Darfur issue, Wang added.
