7.6-magnitude quake hits Vanuatu region

An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck off the Pacific island country of Vanuatu early Sunday and caused a tsunami, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The quake, which occurred at 02:16 a.m. New Zealand local time (13:16 GMT Saturday), was centered 225 km south of Port Vila, capital city of Vanuatu, and at a depth of 24.4 km.

Earlier, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami warning for Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji following the 7.6 magnitude quake. There have been no reports of casualties or damages so far.
