The UN Security Council on Wednesday decided to send an additional 2,000 peacekeepers to Cote d'Ivoire, where the blue helmets have been under attack after the presidential elections in the West African country in November last year.

The 15-nation Security Council made the decision in a resolution unanimously adopted to send an additional 2,000 peacekeepers to help the 10,000 UN troops and police in the UN peacekeeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire, also known as UNOCI.

The Security Council adopted the resolution as recommended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who wrote a letter early this month to the UN body to ask for the additional deployment of the peacekeepers in the West African country due to the deteriorating situation after the presidential elections.

The Security Council decided to authorize "the deployment of an additional 2,000 military personnel to UNOCI until June 30, 2011," the resolution said.
