Two explosions rocked Kandahar in south Afghanistan and gun shots are heard on Saturday, an official said.

The target is the police headquarters in Kandahar city and firing is continuing, the official added, but declined to be identified, saying details would be released later.

Clashes with police have been going on in three different points of Kandahar city and firing of small arms is heard.

"Some terrorists occupied a government building -- Zarnegal Saloon and targeting the police headquarters," spokesman for the provincial administration Zalmai Ayubi told Xinhua.

He also added that fire exchange between the attackers and police is continuing.

Helicopters have begun hovering the area but did not fire.

Meantime, head of the Kandahar provincial council Ahmad Wali Karzai said that some suicide bombers entered Zarnegar Saloon and began targeting the police headquarters.

He also stressed that the situation is under control.

Meantime, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit, in talks with media via telephone from an unknown location, said that six suicide bombers also equipped with assault rifles entered Zarnegar Saloon and inflicted huge casualties on policemen.

However, Xinhua's reporter at the site said that sporadic fighting is still continuing.
