Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) on Monday announced that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir would not run in the next presidential elections, scheduled after four years.

"Al-Bashir will not run in the coming presidential elections. This is the party strategy in democratic transformation and peaceful transition of power," Rabie Abdel-Atti, a leading NCP member, told Xinhua.

"This is a principle in which the NCP believes to create a healthy political atmosphere and a comprehensive political stability. The party does not seek to repeat the faces and does not hold on names. The party is capable of presenting thousands of names. The NCP is working to avail the opportunity for the generations to play their political role," he added.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has achieved a sweeping victory in the general elections held on April 2010, which was boycotted by some Sudanese opposition parties.

The NCP proposed a broad-based government for the opposition to participate in the government, but the opposition demanded a transitional government that arranges for new elections and formulation of a new constitution for the country.
