The International Crime Court will investigate Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his closest allies in the North African country for alleged crimes committed during the recent unrest, a prosecutor said Thursday.

"The ICC will open an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity in Libya since Feb. 15," said Prosecutor Luis Moreno- Ocampo.

He said the ICC had identified Gaddafi and several commanders and officials as having formal or de facto authority over the forces that may have committed the crimes.

Leaders of the Libyan opposition groups could also be investigated if they too commit crimes.

"There would be no impunity in Libya," Moreno-Ocampo said. "No one has authority to attack and massacre civilians."
