14,227 Chinese confirmed safe in Japan: embassy

The Chinese embassy in Tokyo said Friday that the safety of up to 1,4227 Chinese nationals has been confirmed by 6:00 p.m.(0900 GMT).

Regarding the Chinese rescue team in Japan, the embassy said that the Chinese rescuers were still in Ofunato city of Iwate prefecture, helping with the clearance work in the worst-hit areas.

On Thursday the embassy confirmed that one Chinese national was killed in Ishinomaki city of Miyagi Prefecture when the quake- triggered tsunami hit the area.

According to data released by the National Police Agency Friday, the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami have left 6,539 people dead and 10,354 others unaccounted for in Japan by 2: 00 p.m.(0500 GMT).
