Twelve Syrians have been killed so far in clashes between the security forces and protesters in the southern town of Daraa, pan-Arab Al-Jazeera TV reported Wednesday.

Clashes erupted Wednesday morning in Daraa, 100 km south to Syrian capital Damascus, when the security forces stormed al-Omari Mosque, which turned into a seat for protesters days ago.

State-run SANA news agency reported that the security forces clashed with an "armed gang", who had killed a doctor, a paramedic and an ambulance driver before resorting to the mosque.

Syrian official TV broadcasted footage of weapons, ammunition and money allegedly found inside al-Omari Mosque by the security forces.

SANA said Syrians have received around one million phone messages calling for using mosques to brew destabilization and chaos.

Angry protests for political reforms and end of corruption erupted Friday near al-Omari Mosque.
