The African Union (AU) on Friday urged Cote d'Ivoire's incumbent Laurent Gbagbo to step down immediately.

In a statement received in Nairobi, AU Commission Chairman Jean Ping demand Gbagbo "immediately hand over power to President Alassane Ouattara" to avoid more bloodshed.

The AU Commission chief said Gbagbo had repeatedly rejected calls for the transfer of power after the Nov. 28 election.

While the international community recognizes Ouattara as the president-elect, Gbagbo clings to power, citing the ruling by the Constitutional Council in rejection of the election results published by the electoral commission in Cote d'Ivoire.

The pro-Ouattara forces launched the military offensive in December to press for his departure from power. They surrounded Gbagbo's presidential residence on Thursday after days of swift advances.
