26 Syrian protesters were killed by the security forces in the southern town of Daraa while attending the funeral of fellow protesters, pan-Arab al-Jazeera TV reported on Sunday.

The protesters were killed Saturday when they were attending the funeral of 27 demonstrators who had been killed during clashes with the security forces, according to the TV report.

Syria is witnessing unprecedented anti-government protests that firstly erupted three weeks ago in Daraa, 100 km south of the capital Damascus. The protests rapidly spread to other parts of the country and turned into clashes with the police. Some 70 Syrians have been killed so far according to official sources.

On Friday, fresh demonstrations erupted in the main Syrian cities including the capital Damascus, causing the death of 27 protesters, according to al-Jazeera. Friday's demonstrations were dubbed by online activists as "Friday of steadfastness."

Meanwhile, Syrian authorities blamed the occurrences on " foreign powers" that seek to fuel the sectarian and ethnic strife in the country.
