Syrian army units and security forces backed with tanks and armored vehicles on Monday entered Daraa town with news about scores of casualties, pan-Arab al- Jazeera TV reported.

Al-Jazeera cited an eyewitness as saying that the army forces, which entered the town from four directions early Monday morning, opened fire densely on citizens, adding that telecommunication and electricity had been cut off.

Daraa has witnessed massive anti-government protests during the past five weeks as dozens of people were killed in clashes with security forces.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses told Xinhua that clashes erupted between security forces and citizens in Douma, one of Damascus suburbs.

Earlier Monday morning, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that 13 citizens have been killed since Sunday by security forces in the coastal town of Jablah.

According to Syrian activists, some 120 people have been shot dead since what they dubbed "the great Friday" protests, which erupted three days ago.

Syrian authorities blame the country's turmoil on "foreign conspiracy" that is targeting its security and stability.
