Slovakia's first case of the E.coli infection was confirmed Wednesday evening in a 25-year-old man who was admitted to Louis Pasteur University Hospital here.

The man was transferred from Presov's J.A. Reiman Faculty Hospital to the facility in Kosice in serious condition with a diagnosis of hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

The infection was confirmed in the man's feces while in hospital in Presov.

Kosice hospital spokesperson Jaroslava Oravcova said that, as a result of the infection, the patient had renal problems. He also had slight bleeding on his skin, and blood tests had turned up other irregularities.

The exact strain of the bacterial infection hadn't been determined yet.

"We've taken some more blood samples and have sent the biological material for microbiological examination to determine the strain concerned," said head of the hospital's department for infectology and travel medicine, Ivan Schretter.
