"On Sunday night at around 08:00 p.m., two terrorists attacked the residence of the former governor of Uruzgan province and an aide to the president of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. As a result of this attack, Jan Mohammad Khan and Hashim Watanwal, a member of the parliament who was also there, have been martyred," Interior Ministry said in a statement issued in Kabul.

Police rushed to the scene and during the operation, two attackers were killed, the statement said.

According to the statement, one policeman was also killed and three other policemen injured in the attack.

"The incident took place in Kart-e-Chahar neighborhood in third precinct of Kabul city and the incident is being investigated by Kabul police," said the statement.

Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an emailed statement that Taliban killed Khan because he was assisting coalition forces in carrying out night raids against Afghans.

Khan's killing came less than a week after the assassination of Ahmed Wali Karzai, the president's brother and one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan.
