Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed fear on Tuesday over the ongoing Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty, urging the United Nations to demand Israel to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Mikati said after meeting with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams that Lebanon will defend its rights and protect its sovereignty with all the available means.

The Resolution 1701 ended the 34-day war between Israel and Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah in the summer of 2006, and mandated United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to conduct peacekeeping mission in south Lebanon.

Israeli and Lebanese troops exchanged fire on their often tense border on Monday morning. The two armies traded accusations on why the shooting happened.

Mikati informed Williams that the Lebanese government accomplished in cooperation with the parliament a draft law on the Lebanese maritime borders in order to preserve its rights. The UN will be informed about the law after its official publication.

The PM renewed his condemnation of the attack on members of the UNIFIL in the southern city of Saida last week.
