One hundred and ten anti-government insurgents surrendered to Afghan government in Badakhshan province 315 km northeast of capital city Kabul on Thursday, an official said.

"One hundred and ten anti- government militants under Mawlawi Abdul Hadi laid down their arms and surrendered to the government at a ceremony held today,"spokesman for provincial administration Abdul Marouf Rasikh told Xinhua.

These militants were active in Daraim district over the past couple of years, he said, adding that their surrender to government would further improve security situation in Daraim and adjoining areas.

Militants loyal to Taliban outfit have been active in parts of the relatively peaceful Badakhshan province over the couple of years.

Speaking on the occasion, Mawlawi Hadi while vowing to defend peace and stability also called on government to accelerate the rebuilding process and provide job opportunities to the people.
