The death toll from late Friday's two suicide bomb attacks on a military academy in the northern Algerian province of Tipaza has risen to 15, a provincial government official said.

The official told local newspaper El Watan, that 35 people have been injured, eight of them seriously, in the attacks near the entrance to the Cherchell Military Academy.

Earlier reports said one person was killed and 15 others injured in the assaults.

The blasts occurred at about 19:40 local time (1840 GMT), just 10 minutes after Iftar (fast-breaking), when two attackers detonated two bombs near the famous academy in Tipaza, some 100 km west of the capital Algiers.

A witness at the scene told Xinhua that the wounded have been taken to local hospitals.

The North African country has faced an increasing threat by Islamist militants since the 1990s. The security situation in Algeria has been significantly improved in recent years since the government adopted a national reconciliation policy and stepped up military strikes.

However, terrorist attacks against the army and police still occur frequently in some regions of the country.
